With Pixar’s combobreaker Cars 2 sputtering and stalling as the studio’s worst reviewed movie ever, the race for Best Animated Movie should be wide open. Steven Spielberg’s animated debut, motion-captured The Adventures of Tintin, successfully traversed the uncanny valley. But despite being very popular overseas, Tintin couldn’t find an American audience. Kung Fu Panda 2 featured amazing 3D action, but at its core it was essentially the same as the original. Spin-off Puss in Boots trailblazed its own delightfully promising story within the Shrek universe and was one of my personal favorites, but so was our eventual winner, the one-of-a-kind western Rango. All of these animated films had spectacular visuals and stellar voice acting, but Rango‘s eccentric characters stood out from the pack in a very close decision. Winner: Rango
Honorable Mentions: Arthur Christmas, Happy Feet Two
