Best 3D Movie of 2011

January 13, 2012 by

  • Hugo
  • Immortals
  • Kung Fu Panda 2
  • Transformers: Dark of the Moon
  • A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas

2011 was a historic year for the double-edged sword that is 3D in terms of quantity, but we’re more concerned with quality here. Despite a record number of movies offered in the trendy medium, ironically only the post-converted Captain America had a true Captain EO moment. The shield bouncing off the screen lasted only a few milliseconds, but for making us instinctively duck, The First Avenger gets an honorable mention here. A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas included some immersive 3D sessions, but there were also unnecessary and obligatory sequences that brought down any 3D highs reached.

Animated films often contain the best 3D, but this year only the action-packed Kung Fu Panda 2 should be on your short list of showcase show-off features if you have 3D set up in a home theater. Immortals divinely graced us with some godly 3D that elevated the movie above an otherwise unexceptional level. However, any talk of the best live-action 3D since Avatar was quickly stolen by Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, which opened with one of the best 3D shots of the year, but in another very close decision, we’re awarding Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon for that epic hour-long finale that alone is worth the extra few bucks and tinted slight annoyance. Winner: Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Honorable Mentions: Captain America: The First Avenger, Final Destination 5, The Lion King, Puss in Boots
