Arguably a year of the comedy, 2011 was often crowded with something funny for all ages, especially adults. Resulting in our most extensive list of honorable mentions, the oversaturation of the laughter market held some of the biggest surprises of the year. Highly entertaining A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas featured another epic performance from Neil Patrick Harris, but minus points for unnecessarily succumbing to 3D and helping make 2011 a record year for onscreen wieners. 50/50 impressively tiptoed on the line between airy comedy and grounding drama, and its lively heart may have only been matched by Disney’s overwhelmingly triumphant revival of The Muppets, a must-see musical accessible to anybody.
However, we’re gonna stick to pure genre here and reward one of the many R-rated comedies that Hollywood seemingly pumped out every other summer weekend. While the superbly acted Bridesmaids resonated incredibly with girls (and guys) and The Hangover: Part II raucously catered more towards guys again (key word is “again”, a common complaint of some moviegoers who weren’t feeling a formulaic retread), Horrible Bosses gets the win for its appeal to both audiences and its originality. Winner: Horrible Bosses
Honorable Mentions: Bad Teacher, The Change-Up, Friends With Benefits, The Guard, Hall Pass, Just Go With It, Our Idiot Brother, Puss in Boots, Rango, Super, Take Me Home Tonight, Young Adult
