Usually countdown timers on the internet wind up being cheap ways to get everyone excited and then let them down with lame announcements. But this is Valve we’re talking about, and their latest teaser site has been delivering nothing but heavy-hitting announcements that are giving PC fanboys everything they could hope and dream for.
After announcing the SteamOS, a dedicated and optimized operating system just for gaming, Valve has just revealed their second big announcement, Steam Machines. In 2014 Valve will be introducing a line of Steam boxes in a massive effort to bring PC gaming finally into gamer’s living rooms. Yep, the Steam Boxes are coming. Get ready!
With the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 only a month away and the Ouya failing horribly, this is huge news, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see many pre-orders for both the Xbone and PS4 being canceled today with the idea that a far more powerful home console will be available shortly after their release.
Valve hasn’t revealed any details about the specs, but they have confirmed that there will be multiple models made by different manufacturers. So you’ll be able to pick which console is right for you and even have the ability to upgrade, hack, or even build a robot using the system later on — whatever your heart desires.
Even more good news is expected this Friday as Valve still has one more big announcement left. The teaser on the site shows an O+O icon leading many to speculate over what exactly it is. The original SteamOS announcement was just a single O, so could this be a new game like Half-Life 3 or Left 4 Dead 3 working with the OS? Or could the O+O that look like eyes be a hint that Steam Machines will be supporting the highly anticipated Oculus Rift virtual reality set?
