Moviegoers preferred second helpings of leftovers rather than new servings at the domestic box office this Thanksgiving weekend as last week‘s podium films held onto their respective places in the top three throughout the extended holiday. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, the fantasy romance series finale, overtook Skyfall in total domestic gross as it repeated in first place and kept Bond in the runner-up slot for the second consecutive week. After less than three weeks, Skyfall‘s stateside cume has already made it the highest grossing 007 film in the longest running franchise in cinematic history.
After rising from 15th to third place last week, Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln actually increased in earnings this weekend to maintain its hold of the last medal spot. That left newcomers Rise of the Guardians and Life of Pi to fight for the leftovers; the CGI animated film from DreamWorks barely finished ahead of Ang Lee’s 3D adventure. After being delayed since its filming three years ago, the action remake Red Dawn opened in seventh place.
Here were the top five via BOM:
- The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 — Weekend Gross: $43.6 million — Total Gross: $227.4 million (#1 last week)
- Skyfall — Weekend Gross: $35.5 million — Total Gross: $221.1 million (#2 last week)
- Lincoln — Weekend Gross: $25.7 million — Total Gross: $62.8 million (#3 last week)
- Rise of the Guardians — Weekend Gross: $23.8 million — Total Gross: $32.3 million (new)
- Life of Pi — Weekend Gross: $22.5 million — Total Gross: $30.6 million (new)
