Video games on the silver screen have had a spotty track record at best with a number of movies not living up to the popularity of their original incarnations. Remember a while back when they released that Super Mario Bros movie (or maybe you just don’t want to)? Yeah well, that didn’t work out too well. However, if you were fortunate enough to attend SXSW this year, you got to see a slightly different take on a film adaption of Super Mario Bros. One that is grounded a bit more in reality.
As part of the SXSW Film, Joe Nicolosi was commissioned to create five bumpers; one of which would be played before each film during the festival. Bumpers are short film clips that precede films and usually let the audience know that this particular film is playing at a particular film festival or theater chain. The one bumper that stands out to me is the one titled ‘Mario.’ I don’t really want to spoil anything here, but you really do have to watch the bumper to see how great it is. All I’m going to say is that it’s a great take on Super Mario Bros. If you had the good fortune of seeing this bumper in person, let us know how it played.
