James Bond celebrated its 50th anniversary in grand fashion this weekend by dominating the domestic box office as Skyfall, the 23rd movie of the longest running franchise in cinematic history, easily shot its way to the top and scored the best opening for a 007 film. Skyfall‘s estimated $88 million shattered the former record held by the previous Bond film (Quantum of Solace‘s $67.5 million) and was over double that of the debut of Daniel Craig in Casino Royale. One of our most anticipated movies of the year, Skyfall also has the best November opening for a film not of the Harry Potter or Twilight series. The only movies this year with bigger openings were The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Hunger Games.
Last week’s champ, Wreck-It Ralph, settled for second place and is already nearing the $100 million mark. Denzel Washington drama Flight landed in third, Ben Affleck’s Oscar-buzzy Argo dropped to fourth, and Liam Neeson thriller Taken 2 stayed in the top five, which you can check out below via BOM:

- Argo — Weekend Gross: $6.7 million — Total Gross: $85.7 million (#3 last week)
- Taken 2 — Weekend Gross: $4 million — Total Gross: $131.3 million (#5 last week)
