Oz the Great and Powerful‘s magical opening of nearly $80 million, the third-highest ever in March, at the domestic box office over the weekend erased any memories of the previous weak-end’s middling set of flops. Disney’s Oz prequel debuted with numbers that more than doubled the previous 2013 high set last month by Identity Thief, which recently crossed the $100 million mark and settled for third place over the weekend.
Reigning champ Jack the Giant Slayer‘s long, hard fall to second place came at a steep decline of 64% in its sophomore weekend and is mirroring John Carter‘s path to flop city last year. Newcomer Dead Man Down disappointed in its debut at fourth place, just ahead of holdover Snitch, which edged out 21 and Over by less than $7,000.
