‘Oblivion’ Strikes Out ’42’ at Box Office

Sci-Fi Flick Opens to Tom Cruise's 5th-Highest Ever

April 23, 2013 by

One of our most anticipated movies of the year, Oblivion opened over the weekend as the only major theatrical release and easily struck out holdover and reigning champ 42 for the win at the domestic box office. The sci-fi action flick was Tom Cruise’s fifth highest debut of his storied career and returned the popular movie star atop the box office, where audiences have often put his films, after his last outing failed to reach past The Hobbit.

After scoring the biggest baseball movie opening ever the previous weekend, Jackie Robinson biopic 42 stayed strong in the runner-up spot as it absorbed a small decline. The Croods held onto third place as the animated family flick crossed the $150 million mark over the weekend, and previous runner-up Scary Movie 5 dropped to fourth. Rounding out the top five, which you can check out below via BOM, was action sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

Next weekend, one of our honorable mentions for most anticipated movies of 2013, Michael Bay movie Pain & Gain, will see whether its guns are big enough to prevent Oblivion from repeating.
