Mortal Kombat Returning to the Big Screen

Webisodes Coming Soon Based on the Popular Short Film

September 29, 2011 by

Last year Kevin Tancharoen directed and produced the short Mortal Kombat Rebirth that quickly went viral. Appealing to fans of the series, the short depicted a more realistic and gritty interpretation of the Mortal Kombat world and characters. With 10 million hits, New Line Cinema (and larger studio owner Warner Bros.) took notice and commissioned Tancharoen to produce a 10 episode web series as a follow-up to his short film which debuted this past April.

Off the success of both of these projects, it was announced today by New Line and Warner Bros. that they will be going ahead with a new adaption of the Mortal Kombat franchise in the vein of the short film and webisodes. Tancharoen will be attached to direct along with screenwriter Oren Uziel (writer for both the short & webisodes). No actors, plot details, or release date has been set.

Update: The project is aiming to begin production next year with an expected release in 2013. Production details and more studio comments from LATimes Company Town blog.
