Identity Thief may be one of the year’s worst movies so far, but it’s already shaping up to be one of 2013’s biggest hits as it opened over the weekend to big numbers for an easy win at the domestic box office, taking the life out of last weekend‘s reigning champ, Warm Bodies. Director Seth Gordon’s new film, which stars Jason Bateman and Bridesmaids breakout Melissa McCarthy, debuted with a bigger opening than Gordon’s Horrible Bosses, the best comedy of 2011, despite a winter storm in the Northeast that probably cut into attendance.
Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller Side Effects opened in third place, just behind Warm Bodies, and in front of Silver Linings Playbook. The top five, which you check out below via BOM, was rounded out by Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.
- Identity Thief — Weekend Gross: $34.6 million — Total Gross: $34.6 million (new)
- Warm Bodies — Weekend Gross: $11.4 million — Total Gross: $36.5 million (#1 last week)
- Side Effects — Weekend Gross: $9.3 million — Total Gross: $9.3 million (new)
