‘Hotel Transylvania’ Books Biggest September Opening Ever

Box Office: 'Looper' Opens in 2nd; 'Won't Back Down' Suffers One of the Worst Debuts Ever

October 2, 2012 by

It was the last weekend before October, but family flick Hotel Transylvania debuted with the biggest September opening ever at the domestic box office last weekend, easily beating the previous record held by Sweet Home Alabama. The 3D CGI animated movie’s success was great news for its stars Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, whose previous pair-up in That’s My Boy a few months ago flopped. Thanks, America. You’re telling Adam Sandler to stick with the family BS, and now they’ve probably greenlit Grown Ups 3 and Jack and Jill 2.

Sci-fi action thriller Looper opened in second place with nearly half of Hotel Transylvania‘s first take, and inspired-by-actual-events drama Won’t Back Down set its own dubious record for worst opening for a movie in 2500+ theaters, taking the dishonor previously held by comedy The Rocker. In limited release, singing comedy Pitch Perfect made nearly twice as much as Won’t Back Down despite only showing in an eighth of the number of theaters.

This weekend it’ll be interesting to see how the third supernatural-themed animated movie in two months, Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie, performs along with Taken 2. Till then, you can check out the weekend’s top five below via BOM:

  1. Hotel Transylvania — Weekend Gross: $42.5 million — Total Gross: $42.5 million (new)
