Fifth ‘Die Hard’ Steals Presidents’ Day Weekend Box Office

Also: 'Safe Haven' Opens in 3rd Place; 'Beautiful Creatures' Bombs in Ugly Fashion

February 20, 2013 by

It was a good weekend for the Die Hard franchise as A Good Day to Die Hard, one of our honorable mentions for most anticipated movies of 2013, edged out the competition over the extended Presidents’ Day weekend at the domestic box office. Despite poor reviews, the fifth John McClane action-adventure had enough marketing-fueled interest to steal the win from Identity Thief and prevent the reigning champ from repeating after a robust opening.

The latest Nicholas Sparks romance adaptation, Safe Haven, rode some post-Valentine’s Day waves to a third-place opening close behind Identity Thief. The first family film of 2013, computer animated movie Escape From Planet Earth, settled for fourth, and Warm Bodies rounded out the top five, which you can check out below via BOM. The final major wide release, Beautiful Creatures, a teen-targeted literary adaptation hailed as Twilight with witches, flopped and barely missed breaking into the top five.
