After following up its highest ever 2D opening weekend with an easy repeat win last weekend, The Dark Knight Rises joined The Avengers and The Hunger Games as the only films so far this year to three-peat at the domestic box office. The Dark Knight Rises also became the third-fastest movie to cross the $350 million mark, behind its predecessor, The Dark Knight, and the all-time fastest, The Avengers.
For the second weekend in a row, the final installment in Christopher Nolan’s highly acclaimed reboot trilogy overshadowed a couple of new releases, both of which underperformed. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days opened way under its two predecessors for third place, but it didn’t flop as badly as the Total Recall remake, which barely beat the original classic’s opening despite being released 22 years later with much higher ticket prices, a nine-digit budget, and a just-as-massive marketing campaign. One of our most anticipated movies of the year, maybe this remake should have been recalled.
Meanwhile, Ted crossed the $200 million mark and became just the fourth R-rated comedy to do so, joining Wedding Crashers, The Hangover, and its sequel.
Here were the top five via BOM:
- The Dark Knight Rises — Weekend Gross: $35.7 million — Total Gross: $353.9 million (#1 last week)
- Total Recall — Weekend Gross: $25.6 million — Total Gross: $25.6 million (new)
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days — Weekend Gross: $14.6 million — Total Gross: $14.6 million (new)
- Ice Age: Continental Drift — Weekend Gross: $8.6 million — Total Gross: $132.1 million (#2 last week)
- The Watch — Weekend Gross: $6.5 million — Total Gross: $25.5 million (#3 last week)
