There haven’t been a lot of great gangster films or Johnny Depp movies in some time. But Director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) is teaming up with Depp for what looks like it might finally break the streak and give serious movie-goers what they’ve been wanting with the upcoming crime drama, Black Mass.
Without a trailer last year in time for our list of Most Anticipated Movies of 2015, Black Mass has been flying under the radar, but after this intense first look at Depp playing Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, we can’t help but get excited for what could be something very special. It’s rare to see Depp play such a serious and chilling character and even rarer to see such an intense trailer that focuses on a single scene without needing to give anything else away. It’s a shame the movie isn’t coming out sooner because this is all that’s needed to be seen to be sold.
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
Black Mass co-stars Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, Jesse Plemons, Corey Stoll, Rory Cochrane, Sienna Miller, Adam Scott and opens in theaters on September 18, 2015.
