There aren’t many new big-budget fighting games released each year, but 2011 featured the return of two of the biggest and even some surprisingly fun takes on older franchises. While WWE All Stars brought the arcade fun back to WWE’s stale wrestling franchise and was one of our favorite games to play this year, the real showdown went down between the far superior old foes Marvel vs. Capcom and Mortal Kombat. Two may enter, only one may leave, and the Marvel vs. Capcom series making its return this generation stole the show. The latest in the MvC series was a perfect blend of minor changes to gameplay and major changes to graphics, leading to it instantly being embraced by the fighting community and K.O.’ing Mortal Kombat‘s comeback. Winner: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
